Results of risk appetite survey

Early this year, we asked you how you feel about your pension, and how much risk you are willing and able to accept in that regard. The results of this survey were announced in early April. In our previous newsletter, we briefly shared some results with you. In this newsletter, we zoom in on them a little further. Those who completed the survey are referred to below as 'respondents'.

How did we approach the survey?
We asked questions in 2 categories:

  1. We examined risk appetite: how much risk are respondents willing to take with the money we invest for their retirement?
  2. We examined risk capacity: how much risk can respondents take with the money we invest for their retirement?

Respondents indicated that they wished to take little risk
We examined how much risk respondents are willing to take with the money we invest for their retirement. We call this the 'risk appetite'. The results show that at the aggregate level, over 43% of respondents have a very low risk appetite. Looking a little deeper into the different age groups, we see that this is especially true for respondents aged 65 and over (this is 70% of the total group). Respondents under 55 (14% of the total) are willing to take more risk for their retirement.

Respondents say they can take a lot of risk
The second part of the survey shows that over 70% of respondents can take a lot of risk. This group consists mainly of those aged 55 to 64. Respondents have money remaining at the end of the month. They have therefore built up a buffer, with which they can absorb setbacks.

What will we do with these results?
The results of this survey provide valuable information for the pension fund. We will take this information into account in our decisions on the new pension scheme and its implementation. For example, in determining our investment policy and our attitude to risk: how much risk we take when investing your pension money. Risk appetite is the basis for this. It is also important to know what the risk capacity is. With this insight, we can tailor our policies accordingly.

We will continue to work on the content of the new pension scheme and policy in the period ahead. If you wish to know more, we will keep you informed through our newsletters, Op Koers and our website.
